So Carson’s crib is still in our room, yes I still check on him throughout the night too, well the nights he isn’t keeping us up screaming, well last night we headed up to bed, and Pat and I were getting ready to go to bed. I was doing my usual routine, and headed over to Carson’s crib, Patrick was about three feet away from it as well, and I started messing with his covers, I like to make sure he is covered before I go to bed. He started moving around and whimpering, and just about every parent reading this knows what immediate instinct both Patrick and I had, without even muttering word, you guessed it, we both dropped to the floor so fast. So as we are now laying on the floor next Carson’s crib, the idiocy of this hits me and I start cracking up, it took Pat about two seconds to start laughing as well.
This little floor dropping got me thinking about some of the stuff we do to keep the little man happy and maybe in our craziness, we keep a little sanity as well. For instance, Carson now really dislikes having his diaper changed, he would rather we didn’t put a new on him at all. He has figured out how to take them off as well, so if he doesn’t have shorts on, we have to keep an eye on him, but I digress. So now during diaper changes, about 80% of the time it is a two man job, one person at his head, and the other at his bottom. The person at Carson’s head is the one responsible for keeping him still and hopefully not screaming. So what are the antics we pull for this, well of course there is the good ole put the diaper on your head and act like nothing is wrong trick. Now we keep the changing table in the playroom, which is in front of the house with a window that points to the street, I can only imagine what some of the neighbors think if they look in our house. Here we are changing a diaper, with a diaper on our head, or using his battery operated snot sucker (which sucks! and I mean not literally, save your $20 and use the one the hospital gives you, the fancy one doesn’t work at all) to suck on his cheek, or his tongue which he finds hysterical.
It’s funny that now as I am sitting here writing this and thinking about our days, it is amazing to me how all resemblance of adultness leaves the building when it comes to keeping a baby happy. Being a parent is wonderful, especially if you don’t mind being completely crazy in order to remain sane?
So anyone got any tricks for how you keep your sanity being a parent?
